Light will play an important part in creating the atmosphere in any environment, so being clear about how you want the space to feel is critical. Think about the difference between your favourite restaurant, and your regular supermarket… quite a contrast! Do you want your space to feel clean and modern, cosy and warm, dramatic and eye catching, calm and sophisticated? All of these atmospheres will need different lighting treatments to achieve them.
For a very clean contemporary ‘architectural’ feel, conceal linear lighting in slots which run from wall to wall, and consider cool white colour temperature (4000kelvin). For dramatic spaces, use point source lighting such as spotlights to create highlights through contrast. Warm white light (2700kelvin) can help to make a space feel more inviting and friendly, and is especially good for hospitality environments.
